SWTOR Upcoming Story, Story Delay and Voice Actor’s Strike

If you have been wondering why there hasn’t been new story in Star Wars: The Old Republic for a while, here’s a bunch of information about the ongoing Voice Actor’s Strike, and some behind the scenes look at the unfinished upcoming story, which can not be completed until the voice actor’s strike is resolved.

Story Delay & Voice Actor’s Strike

When do we get to play the new story? The Lead Game Producer for the game said during a developer livestream, “Galactic Threads was intended as the 7.6 storyline. Master’s Engima is intended as the 7.7 storyline. We are missing some of the pieces that we need in order to release those to you. We are just as eager for you to play that as you are. As soon as we have those pieces, we will come back to you and let you know what our release schedule will be. We don’t have that information currently, but as soon as we do, we will let you know. We’ll get that information to you as soon as possible. We do appreciate your patience.”

SAG-AFTRA Video Game Voice Actors Strike: This delay and missing pieces most likely has to do with the SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media (Video Game) Strike – the actors labor union. From their website, “SAG-AFTRA members went on strike against video game employers on July 26. The strike was called after more than 18 months of negotiations with some of the largest video game companies ended without a deal. The employers rebuffed our proposals for consent, compensation and transparency around the use of A.I., and instead have countered with loophole-filled language that negates any protections they claim to offer.”

Future Story: Master’s Engima

Although the story is delayed for release, the developers including the Narrative Director introduced more of the upcoming story that we will get to play in the future.

She started by going over the existing storyline, and then replaying the Malgus Teaser that came out recently.

“We wanted to show you – we’re still working on this, we’re adding more details to it – we wanted to give you a little more of a teaser that doesn’t give too much away, but does include something you may have spotted in the Malgus teaser trailer.”

Description of New Teaser: A hologram of Darth Malgus walks up to a triangular artifact, Lana Beniko says, “A Rakatan Mind Trap. Whoever is inside this prison will wish to escape, and they’ll try and claim your body to do it. Your connection to the force will only do so much, I will do what I can to try and protect you.” The player closes their eyes and the screen fades to white, with the player presumably going into the Mind Trap.

“Our next story chapter is Master’s Engima, which is what e are current working on now. Immediately following the events of Galactic Threads, it is investigating more of Darth Nul’s holocron, and I’m staying very light so as to not give you any spoilers, but we are investigating the holocron, and really getting down into what is happening with this holocron and why it’s important. In addition we are also centering around a mysterious figure some of you may have spotted in the trailer. More of that to come! We are chomping at the bit to let ya’ll know what’s going on here. This is really a turning point in the story, things are coming to a head, a lot of these different threads and factions are starting to come to the same conclusion.”
