There over 111 materials that Artifice crafters can use when crafting lightsaber crystals, lightsabers, hilts and more. This guide will go through all the ways to get materials for Artifice in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and a list of every Artifice crafting material and how to get it.
If you’re looking for a specific material, use CTRL+F on your keyboard to search for it, or click its icon below.

Artifice Materials
Artifice crafting require Artifact Fragments, Power Crystals, and Color Crystals, which come from the Archaeology crew skill, and Gemstones, which come from the Treasure Hunting crew skill.
Materials Bay
An important thing to know about all crafting materials is that they don’t go in to your inventory most of the time – instead they automatically go in to a special type of bank called your Materials Bay.
To open your Materials Bay, click the symbol of a diamond on the top left of your inventory.
This Materials Bay is shared by all your characters on your server and anything you craft will automatically pull from your Materials Bay supply. You may have even already earned some Artifice crafting materials while you were playing that went straight to your crafting bay!
Crew Skill Missions
You can send your companions out to gather materials for you. Once you have picked up the Archaeology and Treasure Hunting crew skills, you can open the crafting panel with the B key on your keyboard.
Your companion’s influence level affects a lot of the crafting activities, and you can see your companion’s influence in the circles on the right. A companion with a high influence level can craft and gather faster, have a chance of crafting double items or an augmented items, and a better chance of succeeding and bringing back a better reward from gathering missions. To learn more about raising your companion’s influence, check out my Companion Gift Guide video.
Archaeology
If you open up your Archaeology missions, you’ll notice that the missions tell you what they reward – in this case, your first two available missions reward Grade 1 Power Crystals and Artifact fragments, which is exactly what the first schematic you need to craft as an Artificer requires.
Artifact FragmentsColor CrystalsPower CrystalsYou can send your Companions out to gather by double-clicking the gathering mission. To send your companions to go get Artifact Fragments, Power Crystals and Color crystals, send them on Archaeology missions.
More missions will unlock as you level up your Archaeology skill by sending your companions out on missions or by gathering materials in the open world. Here are the levels at which the next Grade of materials are unlocked…
- Grade 1 Materials: Archaeology level 1
- Grade 2 Materials: Archaeology level 80
- Grade 3 Materials: Archaeology level 160
- Grade 4 Materials: Archaeology level 240
- Grade 5 Materials: Archaeology level 300
- Grade 6 Materials: Archaeology level 350
- Grade 7 Materials: Archaeology level 400
- Grade 8 Materials: Archaeology level 450
- Grade 9 Materials: Archaeology level 500
- Grade 10 Materials: Archaeology level 550
- Grade 11 Materials: Archaeology level 600
Open World
In addition to getting crafting materials from sending your companions out on crew skill missions, with Archaeology, you’ll also be able to pick up archaeological finds you find on the ground in the open world by right clicking them. The closer your Archaeology level is to the recommended level of the material, the more materials you will get, so you can gather higher-level materials, but you won’t get very many if you have a low Archaeology level.
How to Gather
You can spot materials in the open world by looking for the star symbol on your mini map, or the star symbol in a small radius around your large map, or watching out for colorful crystal formations and archaeological artifacts with blue glowing text near them. You can right click these to send your companion to go get them, and you can even gather a different node by right clicking it and gather it yourself as your companion gathers a different one. If you can’t see the yellow star shapes on your map, you may need to open your map with the M key and check the “Resource” checkbox on the bottom left.
Not all items can be gathered from the open world. Your second related gathering skill, Treasure Hunting, will only allow you to gather materials by sending your companions out on missions – you’ll never find Gemstones (not crystals) materials out in the open world.

More Treasure Hunting missions will unlock as you level up your Treasure Hunting skill by sending your companions out on missions (there are no Treasure Hunting materials out in the open world to gather).

Crew Skills Vendor – White-bordered Materials
White-bordered materials are a bit different – you can either send your companions to gather them if you have a mission available for them from Archaeology, or buy them directly from a vendor called the Crew Skills Trade Vendor in the Strongholds & Crew Skills section of the fleet who sells them pretty cheap.
Crafting MaterialsGTN
Crafting Materials can also be bought and sold on the GTN.
Buying Materials: To buy materials from other players, you can go to the Fleet, and go to the Galactic Trade Market section of the map. Once there, right click the big green terminal, and then click in the search box. If you’re looking for a specific material, and aren’t having luck with your crew skill missions, or want to get ahold of the materials quicker, you can type the name of the crafting material in to the GTN, click search, then sort by price per unit lowest to highest. Even better, if you have the schematic window also open, click in to the search box, and SHIFT+LEFT CLICK on the material to automatically put the name of the material in to the GTN search box.
Selling Materials: If you want to make some easy credits, you can sell any materials you aren’t using on the GTN to other players who are crafting – just remember to set the sell price to the number of materials you are selling times the price you want to sell them each at. To take crafting materials out of your Materials Bay to sell, open your Materials bay, and right-click the item. To split a pile of materials or any other item, SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK the pile and type in how many you want to separate out. For normal crafting materials, like what you get from Archaeology, players usually want to buy them in piles, rather than 1 by 1.
Jawa Junk
Jawa Scraps are a type of currency that you can turn in for crafting materials. There are three types of this currency, green, which is called Scavenged Scrap, blue, which is called Assorted Droid parts, and purple, which is called Jawa Junk, which is also what players often call this type of currency. Jawa Scraps can come from many sources, but the most common is by completing your Conquest goal for the week. Almost all crafting materials can be bought with Jawa Scrap, and each type of material costs different amounts.
To spend your Jawa scrap, head to the Fleet, and go to the Cartel Bazaar, which is the northern elevator Republic side and the Southern elevator Imperial side. There you’ll find a group of Jawa vendors who will sell you materials for scrap. Turning scrap in to materials and then selling the materials is also a great easy way to make credits.
All green, blue, and purple Archaeology and Treasure Hunting materials Grades 1 – 11 are available from the Jawas at varying prices. Be warned – the Grade 11 materials are very expensive.
Conquest Decorations
You can also get a special type of decoration from Conquest that is like an open world gathering node – but you can place it down in your stronghold and you can gather from a few of them every four hours or so. Some of these decorations reward specific materials, while others can give you a variety of materials in a certain gathering skill. All conquest crafting decorations can be bought and sold on the GTN.
Artifice can gather Archaeology materials Grades 1 – 8 from Conquest Decorations.
Other Ways
As you play you’ll also get random crafting materials along the way. Finding blue crates hidden on almost every planet will often give you a random set of materials, and crafting bags that also have random materials can be found in the Daily Login rewards, dropped from Flashpoint Bosses, and a reward for completing Conquest.
