The Rakghoul Resurgence, better known as the “Rakghoul Event”, is a limited-time event in Star Wars: The Old Republic. This event happens sporadically, and rotates between the planets of Alderaan, Corellia and Tatooine. The event focuses on the outbreak of the Rakghoul virus, and during the event you’ll travel to the rakghoul tunnels that have been dug deep underground. During the event you can earn some unique rewards including a full set of green outbreak response weapons, armor, infected varactyl and dewback mounts, and the black-green crystal. If you are a high level character working on companion recruitment, you can only finish Dr Lokin’s recruitment quest during the Rakghoul event. You can participate in the event as early as level 25, and the event is available to both free-to-play and subscribed players. This event lets you explore the bio-luminescent rakghoul tunnel map, fight the special Eyeless single Operation boss, and if you’re unlucky, you may even catch the Rakghoul plague and pass it on to other players!

Rakghoul Plague
One of the things that makes the Rakghoul event different from the other limited-time events is the Rakghoul plague. Your character can catch the plague by coming in to contact with rakghouls, infected citizens, or by being too near to another player who has caught the plague when they die. Catching the plague doesn’t have any permanent consequences except eventually dying, but it can be very annoying to have the plague while doing most activities in the game, especially anything that involves combat, as the plague will stun you on a frequent basis the longer you have it. You can choose to either inoculate yourself against the rakghoul plague by buying a temporary Rakghoul Vaccine item and using it, and you can get this item easily from most droid vendors, including one near the cargo holds and banks in the center of the Republic or Imperial fleet. If you have extra credits, I highly recommend buying extra to give to other players you meet who forgot theirs as they are tradeable. However, it can be quite fun to catch the disease and try to spread it to your friends or nearby players, and the game actively encourages you to do so through a quest and series of achievements.
How to Start the Rakghoul Event
To start the Rakghoul Event, look for the large floating terminal on the Republic or Imperial fleet. If you use your Fleet Pass ability to get to the fleet, it will be located just down the stairs from where you load in. This will give you the once-per-event introductory quest. The quickest way to get to the Rakghoul planet mentioned in the cutscene, is by opening your activities tab with the symbol of “three little people” near your minimap, go to the solo tab, then choose the Heroic missions Travel button for the planet, then find the camp where T.H.O.R.N., the rakghoul prevention team, has set up near the spaceport by looking for the quest on the map. After you talk to the questgiver, there’s a special taxi nearby to take you to the Spike, which is the entrance to the underground Rakghoul tunnels.
You can also travel directly to the tunnels by opening your activities tab with the symbol of “three little people” near your minimap then going to the Solo tab and choosing “Event: Rakghoul Resurgence” from the list, and this option will be available if you have not already picked up the Rakghoul weekly quest. However you might still want to complete the introductory quest once per Rakghoul event, as it gives you a free reputation item for talking to the questgivers.
Quests
The Rakghoul missions are a bit spread out. You get a once-per-event introductory mission from the terminal on the Fleet which will lead you to the tunnels, where you can pick up the rest of the quests. Before you do any of the quests, I recommend picking up the hidden Weekly quests, which you can get by opening your activities tab with the symbol of “three little people” near your minimap then going to the Solo tab and choosing “Event: Rakghoul Resurgence” from the list and clicking Travel, even if you’re already in the tunnels. This will give you a weekly that asks you to complete any six Rakghoul daily quests. The other daily quests can be picked up from a Mission Terminal at the start of the Rakghoul tunnels, from a nearby Mission Datapad if you didn’t already pick that mission up in the camp area above ground, and a once-per-event quest from a datapad hidden on a rock in the Western center portion of the first Rakghoul tunnel map. The daily quests are pretty fun and unique, and they’ll have you collecting rakghoul babies, innoculating citizens, scanning beacons, and of course killing Rakghouls. Many of the quests also have special quest items involved, so make sure to look for these items on your quest tracker on the top right of your screen.

Jeelvic’s Quest
Jeelvic’s once-per-event quest is hidden on the first map.
Heroic
There is also a Heroic quest which is on the very farthest east map, it can technically be solo’d as the enemies are not extremely difficult, but the enemies have a lot of health and take a really long time to fight alone, so if you want to do the Heroic quest it’s recommended that you watch chat for a group trying to form, and then rush to the Heroic whenever you can get a group together to complete it.
Operation Boss, the Eyeless
The Rakghoul event also offers a limited-time single operation boss named The Eyeless you can take on with a team of 8 or 16, in both story mode and veteran mode at level 70 or higher for subscribed players only. There’s a once-per-event quest to defeat the Eyeless that you can pick up by buying the THORN Priority Authorization item from the reputation vendors in the tunnel for 1,000 credits, which will give you 2 Rakghoul DNA Canisters for defeating the Eyeless. On storymode, the boss will drop 4 Rakghoul DNA Canister, and has a chance to drop a Barnacle of the Eyeless and a rare chance of dropping a Symbiote Rakling pet. Because the DNA Canister currency is hard to get, players are often putting together groups in general chat to try and run The Eyeless.
The Eyeless is a fun boss to fight, and in story mode you don’t need to be very skilled or well-geared to join in. Before you start, you can ask your group if anyone needs a Vaccine, and trade an extra one to them if they don’t have one on, so that they don’t accidentally die from the plague during the fight.
There are two important mechanics to watch out for. The first is a purple circle that appears on the ground – this circle is temporary, and you should move out of it as soon as it appears, but can move back when it disappears. The second is a green circle – this nasty green circle is permanent, so the tank will move the boss around the room when the green circles appear, so the other members of the group can always reach the boss without standing in a green circle. Lastly, throughout the fight there will be smaller Rakghoul enemies showing up, and players will want to take care of these Rakghouls quickly. The most common mechanic that kills players is accidentally standing too long in the purple or green circles.
There’s two strategies you can do for this fight. The easiest for newer groups is to have the tank put their back against the wall, then move the boss slowly around the room, only moving the boss when a green circle covers up the place where melee players would stand. For groups with two experienced tanks, there is a method to fight the Eyeless where the two tanks will “ping pong” the boss by having him walk up and down the length of the room, never stopping, with the second tank taunting the boss when he gets close to the end of the room. If the Eyeless never stops moving, he will never summon the rakghoul enemies or green circles, making the fight a breeze.
World Bosses
While the Rakghoul event is active, depending on which planet is infested, a unique infected world boss will be available on the planet’s surface. Unlike most normal world bosses, the Rakghoul event world bosses offer great rewards including one of the rare items needed to buy the infected varactyl and dewback mount rewards, and the world bosses each also have a chance to drop a pet you can’t get any other way. The world bosses are not particularly difficult and players often put impromptu groups together to fight them in general chat. The only important thing to know about the rakghoul world bosses is that all of them have a special ability that will remove your vaccine and then infect you if you don’t use another vaccine right away, so you’ll want to stock up on vaccines before you leave, as neither the Revan vendor nor the field repair droid sells Vaccines.
Shellshock – Alderaan World Boss
Directions: Shellshock the Alderaan Rakghoul World Boss is wandering round in the north west section of the King’s Pass map, to the left on the map of House Trader’s Circle. To get to him easily, exit the Spike and head North West.
Shellshock can drop the Plagueshard Lylek pet.
Toxxun – Corellia World Boss
Directions: Toxxun is very easy to get to Imperial side – just taxi or quicktravel to the Axial Park map, and then run to the east. Republic side, the route to Toxxun is a lot harder – you can either taxi or quicktravle to Axial Park, OR take the [HEROIC] Concierge heroic shuttle which is slightly closer. Then you need to run through a series of confusing tunnels and broken paths heading towards the bottom right of the map – use the map to follow the correct direction and not waste time.
Toxxun can drop the Plaguetooth Sleen pet.
Plaguehorn – Tatooine World Boss
Rakghoul Resurgence on Tatooine limited-time event (it’s been years and I still haven’t remember to grab a pic and a map sorry.)
Plaguehorn can drop the Plaguehorn Reek pet.
Dr Lokin
For high level players, the Rakghoul Event is the only time that players who have completed the Knights of the Fallen Empire Chapter 9 can recruit Dr Lokin through the “Kindly Old Monster” alliance alert. There are some steps you should complete before the event happens, as they can be done at any time, including first recruiting Qyzen Fess, speaking to Lokin, bringing him supplies, until you get to the stop that can only be done during the Rakghoul event.
During the supplies step, there’s a hidden achievement you can get by giving him a Barnacle of the Eyeless, which can only be gotten through the Rakghoul Eyeless operation boss, so if you are interested in this achievement, wait until the Rakghoul event comes around, earn a Barnacle, give it to Lokin along with the other supplies, and then go do the Rakghoul event portion of Lokin’s quest.
Reputation
Reputation is a way of gaining favor with different groups by completing quests for them. As you level up your reputation rank, more rewards for that reputation track become available.
By using multiple characters, you won’t be limited to how many Rakghoul quests you run, or to how many Rakghoul DNA Canisters you earn which are the reward currency for the event, but you will still be gated by how many reputation points you can earn – you can only earn a hard limit of 12,000 Rakghoul reputation points in a week. This time-gating mechanism means you’ll only be able to earn up to the Newcomer rank the first week you run the event. You’ll reach that cap by completing the dailies, heroic and weekly form the activity tab on about four characters if you’re a subscriber, or double that if you’re preferred or free-to-play. If you earn over 12,000 reputation points in a week, then keep doing reputation quests and completing Rakghoul dailies, instead of getting more reputation points, you’ll get reputation items which can be consumed from your inventory in future weeks, so if you get any of these items, just hold on to them until the weekly timer resets. The Rakghoul event reward vendor can be found in the Cartel Bazaar section of the Fleet even after the event, so you’ll be able to spend your Rakghoul DNA Canisters currency even after the event ends.
You can see your reputation by pressing “Y” on your keyboard or hover over the symbol of a person on the menu. You can hover over the T.H.O.R.N. name in the list to see how close you are to the next rank, and how many reputation points you have left remaining that you can earn during this week.
- Outsider – 0 Reputation
- Newcomer – 0/5,000 Reputation (5,000 total points needed)
- Friend – 0/7,500 Reputation (12,500 total points needed)
- Hero – 0/10,000 Reputation (22,500 total points needed)
- Champion – 0/20,000 Reputation (untested) (42,500 total points needed)
- Legend – 0/30,000 Reputation (untested) (72,500 total points needed)
You get green reputation items from the dailies, blue reputation items from the weekly and once-per-event Eyeless quest, and a purple reputation item from the Eyeless versions that aren’t 8-man storymode. Here’s what they give you if you have the 15% guild reputation boost and are subscribed.
- Green Reputation Token – 312 points (free-to-play/preferred only 156 points)
- Blue Reputation Token – 724 points (free-to-play/preferred only 362 points)
- Purple Reputation Token – 1,663 points (free-to-play/preferred only 831 points)
You will need 30,000 total reputation points to reach Legend rank. Unlike the other events, it can be harder to know how many runs you would need to do to reach max reputation, as one of the best ways to get reputation is to do the Eyeless boss which rewards a blue reputation item on 8 man storymode and a purple one on the other modes. If you never did the Eyeless boss, you would reach max reputation after running the weekly with the heroic 24 times or on 24 characters.
Achievements
There’s a few interesting achievements related to the Rakghoul event.
The Lighting at the End of the Tunnel
The The Lighting at the End of the Tunnel achievement rewards you for defeating thousands of enemies in the tunnels during the event, and rewards you with the Cure for the Plague legacy title.
- Enforcing the Quarantine, dispatch 1,000 infected creatures and humanoids in the tunnels
- Tunnel Vision, kill 1,000 rakghouls in the tunnels (grants Rakghoul Ravager legacy title)
- Tunnel Eradication, defeat 3,000 non-player opponents in the tunnels
Hey, I’m a Fungi
Defeat all the fungus-harvesting Rakghouls in the tunnels, offers no reward but it’s interesting to try and track these enemies down during the event. You’ll need to kill five of each of the special yellow-named Fungus enemies hiding in the Rakghoul tunnel caves. Each ones spawns in a specific location, so if you’re working on this achievement and are missing specific ones you can go to that specific location and stake it out or just keep checking in to see if the Fungus enemy has loaded in.
The last enemy, the Catalyst, you only need to find one of, but it is special – it has a random chance of loading in at any of the other Fungus locations when there is not a Fungus enemy already there – so if you’re looking for The Catalyst, you’ll want to kill the other Fungus enemies and hope a Catalyst spawns next instead of another Fungus enemy.
- 0/5 Fungus Breeder
- 0/5 Fungus Collector
- 0/5 Fungus Cultivator
- 0/5 Fungus Harvester
- 0/5 Fungus Planter
- The Catalyst
Lord of the Raklings
Collect all the rakling pets and then have them out when you fight the Tunnel Luker, a roaming strong enemy in the tunnels. See the Rare Pet Drops section below for more information about where each rakling pet can come from.
- The Contaminated Rakling, Champion Rank, 4 Canisters
- The Irradiated Rakling, Newcomer Rank, 2 Canisters
- The Pale Rakling, drops from Frenzied Plaguebearer
- The Crimson Rakling, drops from The Tunnel Lurker
- The Midnight Rakling, drops from The Midnight Rakghoul in Kaon Under Seige
- The Fungal Rakling, drops from Fungus Elites
- The Symbiote Rakling, drops from The Eyeless
Other Achievements
The additional achievements involve defeating additional enemies, doing many daily and weekly and heroic missions, and defeating other players in the PvP instances.
Rare Pet Drops
Pale Rakling
The Pale Rakling is a rare drop from the Frenzied Plaguebearer, an enemy that has a chance to spawn and replace the normal plaguebarers that appear when you leave the spaceport of the infected planet. Veteran players may also have the Pale Rakling from the original one-time Rakghoul event on Tatooine.
Crimson Rakling
The Crimson Rakling is a rare drop from the Tunnel lurker, a large red rakghoul enemy that wanders around the Rakghoul tunnels on a set path.
Midnight Rakling
The Midnight Rakling is a guaranteed drop from the limited-time Midnight Rakghoul boss in the Kaon Under Siege Flashpoint, who is hidden in the south west section of the Transit District map in Kaon City. Much like the world bosses, you will need to have a small pile of vaccines handy as the boss does a big splash of rakghoul infection and you will need to reapply your vaccine every time he does that. Only one peet drops, so if you are running with a group of friends you will need to run the Flashpoint multiple times so you can each get one. The Kaon Under Siege Flashpoint is meant for levels 50-75, and does not have a solo mode available. Kaon Under Seige is also NOT available through the group finder, so you will need to put together a group the old fashioned way or try and solo the 4-man flashpoint.
How to Start (Republic): To start the rakghoul Flashpoint quest line at level 50 or higher, Republic players will speak to Whisper the Cathar in the Supplies section of the Fleet. The Flashpoints and story quest are located on the Gav Daragon. To reach the Gav Daragon after speaking to Whisper, players will head to the eastern elevator of the Fleet, go to the Interfleet Transport level, and take the taxi to the Gav Daragon. Republic players looking to run Kaon Under Seige outside the storyline will speak to the Yindo located on the South East section of the Mission Deck of the Gav Daragon, in the Tion Hangar entrance. To reach the Gav Daragon, players will head to the eastern elevator of the Fleet, go to the Interfleet Transport level, and take the shuttle to the Gav Daragon.
How to Start (Imperial): To start the rakghoul Flashpoint quest line at level 50 or higher, Imperial players will speak to Lord Velnine in the Supplies section of the Fleet. The Flashpoints and story quest are located on the Ziost Shadow. To reach the Ziost Shadow after speaking to Lord Velnine, players will head to the western elevator of the Fleet, go to the Interfleet Transport level, and take the taxi to the Ziost Shadow. The Flashpoints are located on the Mission Deck of the Ziost Shadow, in the North East. Imperial players looking to run Kaon Under Seige outside the storyline will speak to the EN-C7 droid located on the North East section of the Mission Deck of the Ziost Shadow. To reach the Ziost Shadow, players will head to the western elevator of the Fleet, go to the Interfleet Transport level, and take the shuttle to the Ziost Shadow.
Fungal Rakling
The Fungal Rakling is a rare drop from any of the Fungus rakghoul enemies in the tunnels, including the Fungus Breeder, Fungus Collector, Fungus Cultivator, Fungus Harvester, Fungus Planter, or rare The Catalyst.
Symbiote Rakling
The Fungal Rakling is a very rare drop from The Eyeless operation boss.
Plagueshard Lylek
The Plagueshard Lylek is a rare drop from the rakghoul lylek Alderaan world boss, Shellshock.
Plaguehorn Reek
The Plaguehorn Reek is a rare drop from the rakghoul reek Tatooine world boss, Plaguehorn.
Plaguetooth Sleen
The Plaguetooth Sleen is a rare drop from the rakghoul sleen Corellia world boss, Toxxun.
Rewards
The Rakghoul rewards are mostly purchased with Rakghoul DNA cannisters currency, which are earned from one of the daily quests called Navigating the Tunnels Republic-side and The Tunnel Network Imperial-side, two from the the daily Heroic quest, one from the easy once-per-event Jeelvic the Jawa’s quest, one from the evil daily Spreading Infection quests where you need to infect 3 players, two from the once-per-event Eyeless operations boss quest, and you can get 4 to 8 DNA Canisters for every time you defeat the Eyeless operations boss. If you’re a solo player, that means you can earn three per day per character by doing the daily and heroic, an extra one if you are willing to do the spreading infection quest each day, and a bonus one for finding Jeelvic, for a total of 22 per week per character for doing the scanning canister daily and heroic quests each day or 29 if you also do the spreading infection quest each day. However, the Eyeless is where most players will get their Rakghoul DNA cannisters, because if you ran this short boss once a day every day of the event even just on 8-person storymode, you’d get a total of 28 cannisters, in addition to any you wanted to earn from the solo activities. You also get extra canisters by running the 16-man mode or the more difficult Veteran Mode. You’d need a total of 376 Rakghoul DNA Canisters to buy one of every reward, so I recommend instead taking a look at the rewards and figuring out which ones you like and want to work towards.
You can see how many Rakghoul DNA Canisters you have by clicking the currency tab of your inventory, and the canisters are legacy-bound and can be spent and earned on any character.
Special Items
Apart from Rakghoul DNA Canisters, you’ll also need to turn in some special items for the Legend-rank rewards including the infected varactyl and dewback mounts.
Symbiotic Fungal Bloom
The Symbiotic Fungal Bloom is a rare item drop from the yellow Fungus enemies spread around the Rakghoul tunnels, or their rarer counterparts The Catalyst enemies. The Fungal Bloom tradeable if you or a friend gets an extra, and you’ll need a total of 9 Symbiotic Fungal Blooms if you want one of each reward. Players sometimes refer to this as “the green thing” or “the thing from the yellow enemies”. Here’s a map to find your bloom – this is by far the most frustrating item to get ahold of.
Exotic Plague Specimen
The Exotic Plague Specimen item drops from the world bosses. This item is NOT tradeable so if you’re running the world bosses do not choose Need on the roll unless you need it, as you only need a total of three specimens to get each of the mounts and the pet. Players sometimes refer to this as “the blue thing”.
Barnacle of the Eyeless
The Barnacle of the Eyeless drops from the Rakghoul Eyeless operation boss, but not enough will drop for all players. More of these drop in Veteran mode than Story mode. This item is also tradeable if you or a friend gets an extra, and you’ll only need a total of three barnacles if you want both mounts and the pet. Players sometimes refer to this as “the brain”.
