Nautolan

Amphibious humanoids from the planet Glee Anselm, Nautolans are distinguished by their tentacle-like head-tresses. Because of its primarily aquatic surface and its location off the major hyperlanes, only a handful of outsiders have ever visited Glee Anselm; as a result, little is known about Nautolan culture on their homeworld, though extrapolations can be made from those individuals who venture out into the greater galaxy.

Despite their aquatic origins, Nautolans can breathe air and are completely at home on land, and they can be found in a wide variety of professions. They have a reputation for being both smart and practical, and the existence of several Nautolan Jedi speaks to an affinity with the Force. With the arrival of the Empire, the Nautolans fought alongside the Republic, although some among them fear this will lead to unnecessary suffering for their people.

Nautolan Classes

You can play any type of character as a Nautolan, as species are not restricted to certain Origin Stories or Combat Styles in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

However, you must unlock the Nautolan species before you can play it.

All players will need to unlock the Nautolan before they create a Nautolan character. All players can unlock the Nautolan for all classes by purchasing the item Legacy Species Unlock: Nautolan from the Cartel Market with Cartel Coins or from the GTN with credits. The Cartel Market sells this unlock for 600 Cartel Coins, the price and availability on the GTN will change day to day and per server, but it is likely very expensive. There is no other way to unlock this species, it is considered a “Cartel Market” species because of this and was added after the game’s launch.

Jedi Knight

A symbol of hope in dark times, the Jedi Knight stands for the legacy of the Jedi Order, protecting the Republic and keeping the peace across the galaxy.

The most well-known Nautolan, Kit Fisto, was a force-sensitive Jedi Knight and is the character where all Nautolan lore has been derived from. After they grow up from their delicate childhood phase, Nautolan’s bony exoskeleton and dense cartilage make them tough and resistant to glancing blows, perfect for the Jedi Knight who focuses on combat. You will see various Jedi Master Nautolans as you play, and it is not uncommon to see Nautolans as Jedi. Master Oric Traless was a Nautolan on the Jedi Council.

Jedi Consular

Jedi Consulars channel the power of the Force for strength in combat and wisdom in diplomacy. Jedi Consulars always seek to grow their knowledge.

Nautolans’ empathetic sensitivity makes them ideal diplomats, as they can sense the mood of those around them even if their target has strong control over their outward expression. A Nautolan’s empathetic sensitivity is even stronger underwater, making Nautolans a fantastic choice for under water diplomacy, for instance on worlds like Manaan or Kamino. Although Nautolans often reflect the mood of those around them, a Jedi Consular Nautolan could use the emotion-repressing training of the Jedi to fight back against their natural movement towards their colleagues moods.

Nautolan’s powers could also be used beyond sentient species. Nautolan Jedi Master Sulan attempted to connect with akk dogs through Force-bonding exercises, and his sensitivity to pheromones may have aided in his attempts. You will see various Jedi Master Nautolans as you play, and it is not uncommon to see Nautolans as Jedi.

Trooper

Troopers are the embodiment of the Republic military’s highest aspirations – the most advanced fighting force in the galaxy.

When the Nautolan people pledged their allegiance to the Republic, not all who served joined the Jedi. Many Nautolans joined the Republic, bringing their positive natures and strength to the Republic military as leaders and soldiers.

Nautolans crave adventure and are as likely to be nobles or scoundrels as they are to be scouts or soldiers.

Smuggler

Above all else, Smugglers make their own destinies. Smugglers require fast reflexes, fast wits and a fast draw with a blaster.

It’s important for a smuggler to keep their cool, something an average Nautolan may have difficulty with due to their emotion-sensing tendrils. However, the smuggler is known for being hot-headed and impulsive, and an average Nautolan might not be any more unlucky than the average smuggler. A Nautolan Smuggler could also use their extra-sensory skills to bargain their way out of bad situations, or negotiate a better deal when setting a price for their smuggling missions. Smugglers are beholden to no traditions, and it would not be surprising to see a Nautolan smuggler.

Nautolans crave adventure and are as likely to be nobles or scoundrels as they are to be scouts or soldiers.

Sith Warrior

Above all else, Smugglers make their own destinies. Smugglers require fast reflexes, fast wits and a fast draw with a blaster.

Although the Nautolans allied with the Republic, a fallen Nautolan would make a strong opponent in battle, as they could feed off of the emotional states of those near them. Sith Warriors use base emotions such as fear, anger, and hatred to fuel their focus and determination, and with their extra-sensory tendrils, a Nautolan Sith Warrior could also use their opponent’s mood to fuel themselves. Deadly, expert fighters, Nautolans have a strong exo-skeleton that could be combined with Sith armor to create a terrifying opponent.

While it is uncommon to see an alien in the ranks of the Sith, a prominent Sith named Darth Malgus has seized the opportunity to create a new Empire, one that embraces alien cultures and is strengthened by diversity.

Sith Inquisitor

Dark secrets are the lifeblood of the Sith Inquisitor. The Inquisitor experiments with forbidden powers in order to excel and seize authority.

Most Inquisitors prefer a more manipulative operating style, being masters of exploiting both enemies and allies to further their own agendas. An extremely-well trained Nautolan could use their mood-sensing abilities to manipulate those around them, in and out of battle. However, their weakness is their susceptibility to feeling the emotions of those around them, and a strong Sith often inspires feelings of terror, hopelessness and despair to all in their path.

The Sith Inquisitor starts off as a slave in the story, and aliens being oppressed by the Empire is a common theme in the universe. While it is uncommon to see an alien in the ranks of the Sith, a prominent Sith named Darth Malgus has seized the opportunity to create a new Empire, one that embraces alien cultures and is strengthened by diversity. Late in the expansions, you will meet Veeroa Denz, a Nautolan Sith Acolyte and former slave.

Bounty Hunter

It’s never a question if a Bounty Hunter will find you… only when. Both infamous and anonymous at the same time, Bounty Hunters are far more than mercenaries for hire.

If even the average Nautolan can sense the mood of nearby sentients due to the pheromone sensitivity of their tendrils, it’s safe to assume that an exceptional Nautolan would have an extremely strong pheremonal sense. A Togruta Bounty Hunter could use their strong extra-sensory abilities to sense whether a bounty target has been in the room, find a hidden target in a building, or perhaps even sense their target from far away. A Bounty-hunter who focuses on capture could use their senses to know if a target is frightened or ready to fight, in order to keep their target alive. A Nautolan Bounty Hunter would have to deafen their emotions however, as they may be susceptible to gaining the frightened emotions of their target.

Bounty Hunters carve their own paths, and it would not be surprising to see a Nautolan Bounty Hunter.

Imperial Agent

Imperial Agents must master the arts of infiltration, seduction and assassination to carry out the most dangerous and sensitive Imperial assignments.

Nautolans are rarely seen as Imperial Agents for a key reason: agents are often undercover, and must have complete mastery over how they portray themselves. Due to their susceptibility of picking up and mirroring the emotions of those around them, a Nautolan would have a difficult time acting their part during emotionally charged situations. This does not mean there are no Imperial Agent Nautolans though – one benefit of their weakness is that they could genuinely exude emotions as long as they have a fellow group member to feed off of, and could be one of the few species who could successfully trick a Jedi’s emotion-sensing techniques by portraying genuine, mirrored emotion.

Apart from the role of the Imperial Spy, Nautolans are very rarely seen in the employ of the Empire, but that does not mean they are never found. Colonel Grezor was a Nautolan male who served the reconstituted Sith Empire during the Cold War, and aided the Empire during the invasion of the planet Denova.

While it is uncommon to see an alien in the ranks of Imperial Intelligence, the Minister of Intelligence recognizes the need to take advantage of ‘an alien mind’. A prominent Sith named Darth Malgus has seized the opportunity to create a new Empire, one that embraces alien cultures and is strengthened by diversity. The Chiss species is considered by the playerbase to be the flagship species to play the Imperial Agent with, due to the Empire’s strong alliance with the Chiss and their analytical minds.

Appearance

Nautolans are amphibious humanoids with mottled green skin and sharklike eyes. Instead of hair, a Nautolan sports a crown of long green tendrils.

– Star Wars Ultimate Alien Anthology

Color

Nautolan are available in different shades of green, blue and purple.

Nautolan Tentacles

The Nautolan tentacles and face shape are combined together in the character creator, there are five types of tentacles mixed in with a bunch of different face shapes.

Head-tails

Although amphibious, Nautolans feel more at home in the water than on land. Their head tendrils, which serve as major sensory organs, barely function out of water. In water, Nautolans can sense odors through their tendrils. The average Nautalan can tell the emotional state of another being based entirely an the changes in pheromones. This acuity lends to the complexity of their language. Their ability to communicate is keyed to the perception of pheromonal signatures; without it, their spoken words lose a great deal of meaning.

Nautolan Patterns

You can also choose a pattern for your tentacles. These are the different patterns, there are multiple colors you can choose from for the pattern.

Nautolan Eyes

Nautolan eyes are all one color and help them see in low-light and underwater.

Nautolan Accessories

Nautolan can not wear helmets. There are however some Nautolan accessories and jewelry you can choose when creating your character.

Each Nautolan’s head is crowned by long, tentaclelike tendrils, which the Nautolan decorates with leather bands, metal rings, or beaded ties.

Dark-Side Corruption

As Nautolan fall to the dark side, they have the option to turn on Dark Side Corruption, where they begin to get red eyes and their veins become more visible. (There seems to be some bugs related to Nautolan Dark-side appearances.)

Nautolan Naming

You can choose any name you want for your Nautolan character, you do not have to try and follow any type of conventions, as the Nautolan have spread far and wide across the galaxy, with some being given a traditional Nautolan name, while others have been given a name traditional to their home planet, and other take on a code name or nick name.

Nautolans do not seem to have any canon naming rules or suggestions. The biggest examples we have of Nautolan names are Kit Fisto, Leeha Narezz, Bengel Morr and Zatt. Some have last names and some do not.

I did however like the fan-made “rule” created for the Star Wars 5e roleplaying game, “Nautolan names are generally short and melodic. Female names usually end in a vowel. Surnames are familial.”

Nautolan Name Generator

If you want, you can use a generator to generate a name for your Nautolan. Generators follow a set of rules to try and put together a name for you.

The creator of the Fantasy Name Generator used these rules to generate Nautolan names: “Nautolan names are quite varied. Some names are soft and melodic while others are more guttural and difficult to pronounce. The lengths of their names can also differ a lot, ranging from 1-3 syllables in both first and last names, resulting in some very short and very long names. Female names tend to have more softer sounds, but the differences can be subtle in many occasions.”

Nautolan Lore

While they are easily recognizable as the “cat people”, Nautolan history is firmly established in the genocide of its people.

Physiology

Nautolans are a natively aquatic humanoid species capable of breathing underwater. Webbed toes and fingers aid them in swimming through the depths. A dense cartilaginous support network combines with a bony endoskeleton to make them exceptionally tough. Lengthy green tendrils emerge from their heads, serving as sensory organs that detect the pheromones of nearby sentients. Their large black eyes are adapted to pierce the murkiest underwater environments. However, Nautolans are capable of surviving for extended periods on dry land.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

The Nautolan skeletal structure is reinforced with extra cartilage that makes the species exceptionally resilient. Their rubbery hide gives them extra damage protection.

– Star Wars Ultimate Alien Anthology

Family

Nautolans mate for life and are extremely loyal to their families. Both parents contribute equally to raising their young. Historically, Nautolan parents arranged marriages for their children, but in modern times this has become much less common.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Children

Nautolans are an egg-laying species. When hatching, they emerge from the eggs as tadpoles. Arms, legs, and head-tails begin to emerge during the second year of life, at which point they are roughly the same size as a human infant. Initially, these limbs are not strong enough to support their weight on land, so most spend their early years in aquatic environments.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Nautolans began life as tadpoles that hatched from a clutch of eggs. They matured quickly: Within two years, most were similar in size to humans. Mating was considered more of an evolutionary necessity than a matter for emotional attachment, although most Nautolans mated for life. Jedi Master Kit Fisto was a Nautolan.

– The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia

Society

An elected Council of Elders forms the centralized government for Nautolan settlements. On Glee Anselm, representatives from each settlement cooperate to form an overarching centralized government. Notably, “elder” is a title of respect, as representatives are elecled based upon merit rather than age.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Personality

Nautolan moods often reflect those of nearby sentients due to the pheromone sensitivity of their tendrils. As a broad generalization, Nautolans are happy and free-spirited, particularly when given an opportunity to pursue their interests. However, when confronted with anger or despair, members of this empathetic species are prone to respond in kind.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

In almost any situation, a Nautolan could be counted on to act with joy and unrestrained happiness, as evidenced by Nautolan warriors smiling in the midst of combat.

– The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia

Nautolans are loyal and steadfast companions. They wear their moods on their proverbial sleeves, expressing both joy and despair with equal zeal. Though polite and civilized under most circumstances, Nautolans tend to reflect the moods of others around them. The tendrils on their heads sense the pheromones released by others. This can inadvertently affect a Nautolan’s disposition-for better or for worse. Despite their peaceful nature, Nautolans are not above defending themselves.

– The Clone Wars Campaign Guide

Nautalans reflect the moods of those around them. When confronted by anger and violence, they respond in kind. When approached in a calm, civilized manner, they seem helpful and polite.

– Star Wars Ultimate Alien Anthology

They are renowned for empathetic and cheerful natures and for enjoying everyday activities. Though generally peaceful, they are also tough and strong.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Homeworld

Glee Anselm is a Mid Rim world filled with a broad range of aquatic environments. Its few landmasses are largely archipelagos. While Nautolans evolved in Glee Anselm’s oceans, another unrelated species—the Anselmi—arose to dwell upon its landmasses. Constant fighting over the land turned the Anselmi into a warlike people. This has led to many conflicts throughout the world’s history.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Glee Anselm, a planet of vast swamps, lakes, and seas located in the Mid Rim.

– Star Wars Ultimate Alien Anthology

Amphibious beings with green skin and a collection of head-tails that fell from the rear of their skulls. Nautolans were native to the Sabilon region of the aquatic world Glee Anselm, a planet they shared with the Anselmi. Nautolans retained many physical traits of their amphibious ancestors, including webbed fingers and toes.

– The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia

Nautolans have coexisted relatively peacefully with their land-dwelling neighbors, the Anselmi, for several millennia. Conflicts between the species have usually been brief, though sometimes quite bloody. The Nautolans and the Anselmi fought brief wars over fishing rights, subaquatic development, and even waste disposal. Whenever space seems at a premium, Anselmi tend to encroach upon Nautolan territories. Being physically superior, Nautolans push back most incursions long enough for attrition to render the problem moot. The Republic has stepped in multiple times to settle disputes, but it might be only a matter of time before the two native species of Glee Anselm conclude that they have irreconcilable differences.

– Star Wars Ultimate Alien Anthology

Language

Nautolans’ native language is Nautila, which was originally created for underwater use. In atmosphere, the language is largely unpronounceable, as it is dependent upon pheromones that are dispersed through the water in conjunction with spoken sounds. Consequently, Nautolans invariably learn to speak another language, most commonly Basic or Anselmian.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Naulolans speak and read Nautila, but their language is pronounceable only underwater. On land, Nautila loses a great deal of detail, which most Nautolans find annoying. When our of water, Nautolans tend to speak Anselmian—learned from their nonamphibious neighbors, the Anselmi—or Basic, which serves them well enough when they travel throughout the galaxy.

– Star Wars Ultimate Alien Anthology

Perception of the Force

Many Nautolans recognize the significance of the Force, and there were numerous Nautolan Jedi. However, the Force does not play a central role in Nautolan culture.

– Star Wars: Forces of Destiny rulebook

Head-tails

Nautolans were known for their incredible sense of smell, which came from olfactory receptors located throughout their head-tails. This incredibly sophisticated olfactory sense allowed a Nautolan to detect the presence of pheromones and changes in a being’s body chemistry. It was an exceptional sense underwater, but faded when the Nautolan lived on land. Because of this, and the fact that their native Nautolan language could be fully pronounced only underwater, Nautolans preferred to live submerged.

– The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia

Although amphibious, Nautolans feel more at home in the water than on land. Their head tendrils, which serve as major sensory organs, barely function out of water. In water, Nautolans can sense odors through their tendrils. The average Nautalan can tell the emotional state of another being based entirely an the changes in pheromones. Water

As amphibious creatures, Nautolans can breathe underwater. Nautolans are also expert swimmers, even when distracted or threatened. To see underwater, they also have natural low-light vision.

Veeroa Denz

Many Sith have perished while defending their homeworlds from the Eternal Empire’s forces, but others have taken the opportunity to create new lives elsewhere. One such person is Veeroa Denz, a Nautolan slave whose Force sensitivity saw her thrown into the harsh acolyte training on Korriban. She survived her trials and a cruel overseer only to become a target of Zakuul’s soldiers when they stormed the Sith Academy. She escaped the slaughter with a bit of luck and a well-timed betrayal of her overseer and fled to Nar Shaddaa to start a new life. Veeroa embraced the unlimited freedom of the Smuggler’s Moon, offering help to other fugitives whose Force sensitivity had made them targets of the Eternal Empire’s ruthless advance. Eventually, those armies arrived in orbit around Nar Shaddaa as well, and Veeroa saw her new home become a prison. She has sworn to aid the Alliance only until Zakuul is vanquished, after which she plans to resume her quiet life of freedom in the shadows.

– Star Wars: The Old Republic companion entry

Sith Academy

I was training on Korriban when the Eternal Empire’s forces attacked. I learned afterward that Arcann and his brother led the invasion. I had only begun learning the ways of the Force. When my overseer died, I was forced to flee Korriban. This is where I wound up. I follow my own ways–no one else’s.

My overseer’s death was not entirely at the enemy’s hands. She was a cruel-hearted woman. No one misses her. I became a fugitive when I decapitated my overseer. I offer no apologies for what I did to get here. You’ve seen Korriban. It’s where people like me go to die. Don’t be distracted by details. We need each other. It’s that simple. I was happy to escape Korriban. I never looked back. The past doesn’t concern me, only the future. I offered to aid the Alliance because I care about my new home–and I know what happened to Bothawui.

– Excerpts from Veeroa Denz’s converstions

Kit Fisto, Jedi Master

The Nautolan Jedi Master Kit Fisto liked to keep a low profile within the Jedi Order. He was uninterested in a position on the Jedi Council, feeling that he was much more suited to a place on the Council of Reconciliation. With his Force-augmented natural ability to read the emotions of others through changes in their body chemistry, Master Fisto believed he could be a valuable addition to any diplomatic team, though he did not consider himself a diplomat.

Every Nautolan is blessed with a mantle of long tentacles that enhances his or her sense of smell. This ability is particularly effective in watery environments, and much less so out of water. Rather than manifesting as a heightened awareness of danger, this ability allows Nautolans to pick up subtle shifts in pheromones and body chemistry. To the Nautolans, this sensory input contains a great deal of information. Their own language relies on reading the speaker’s body chemistry, much the same way that other languages rely on reading inflection and body language.

Kit Fisto stepped in to complete the instruction of the Mon Calamari Padawan Bant Eerin after her original Master, Tahl, died from injuries sustained during a mission to New Apsolon. Bant was Kit Fisto’s first apprentice. Though he knew he was the right choice for the Master of an amphibious Padawan, he harbored some doubt that he was ready to be any apprentice’s Master. After the completion of Bant’s training, Master Fisto did not make an effort to take on a new Padawan. Instead, he focused on his duties in the Temple on Coruscant.
