SWTOR Stun Guide

Your stun abilities allow you to temporarily take enemies out of the fight in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Each class has at least one stun ability available, either built into their combat abilities, or as a choice on their ability tree.

What are Stuns?

Stuns incapacitate an enemy for a short amount of time. Stuns can be incredibly useful while playing, as most enemies can be stunned when doing activities like story, heroics, exploration quests, or any other non-group quests. Your stuns can be used in two different ways – either to stop an enemy from attacking and doing damage, or as a way interrupt the enemy’s casted abilities.

Enemies with a yellow debuff icon of a main’s portrait with wavy lines are enemies with Boss Immunity, which means they can not be stunned. Most bosses can’t be stunned in Flashpoints and Operations, but often solo bosses can be stunned, so you need to look and see if they have the debuff to know if you can stun them or not.

Stuns by Class

This is a list of all the stuns available in the game by class (or rather, by Combat Style and Discipline). If you click the name of the stun, you can learn about what exactly the stun does, its range, what level you get it at, and where it’s a choice in your ability tree if it’s not available by default. Some stuns work against all enemies, while others are only for weaker enemies.

CCs by Class

Crowd Control abilities let you stun an enemy before you start combat while you are in stealth, which allows you to not enter combat and either sneak around the enemy, or knock an enemy out before the fight. Only a few Combat Styles have a CC available to them, and it often goes by a bunch of different names – cc, sleep, crowd control, mez, or sap.

  • Sleep Dart - Stealth Crowd ControlLevel 35

Stuns in Operations and Flashpoints

All Operation bosses and Flashpoint bosses are immune to being stunned, but your stun can be extremely useful against many of the smaller enemies during Operations or Flashpoints, even during boss fights. Some fights even require you to use your stun to keep some of the smaller enemies locked down so they don’t wipe the group out.

Stun Grenades

In addition to your abilities, you can add an extra stun to your arsenal by buying or crafting Stun Grenades.

Electro-Stun Grenades shock up to 3 targets in the area for energy damage, and stuns them briefly. Tougher enemies are stunned for a shorter duration. Most enemies will be stunned for 6 seconds, strong enemies with a silver star will be stunned for 4 seconds, and elite or stronger enemies with a gold star will be stunned for 2 seconds.

Crafting grenades yourself is pretty easy. All players with the Cybertech crew skill can craft the basic blue-bordered grenades, with more and higher-level versions becoming unlocked directly from the Cybertech crew skills trainer as you level up. The purple-bordered versions, which do more damage their their matching blue counterparts, can be learned by first crafting the blue ones, then reverse-engineering them. For every stack of three you reverse-engineer, you have a 60% chance of learning the Advanced purple-bordered version.

You really only need the cheapest version you can find on the GTN, or whichever is cheapest for you to craft, if what you care about is the stun. All versions stuns work the same.

Stuns in PvP

Stuns are incredibly useful in PvP, to stop a player getting to an objective, to finish off an enemy, or to keep them out of the fight for a few seconds. If you are using stuns in PvP though, there’s something important you need to know.

Resolve is a special a mechanic that only exists in PvP. it affects how much you or an enemy can be stunned. You can see your resolve are circling around your character portrait, or above their head – it’s a black bar that will partially fill up every time they get stunned, pulled, or pushed. If either you, a teammate, or an enemy is stunned, pulled or pushed too many times, their white bar will fill up and they will be “white barred”, and will no longer be able to be stunned for a short period of time. Generally, stuns fill up the resolve bar more than moves like pushes or pulls – so it’s sometimes better to hold off on stunning if there is a less-expensive resolve mechanic you can use to stop your opponent if you’re playing something like Huttball that’s time-sensitive.

Slows in PvP

Slows are abilities that slow an enemy down instead of stunning them, and in most content, slowing enemies down is pretty pointless. Slow abilities are mainly used in PvP content, to slow down other players from getting to objectives, or slowing them down so they can’t easily run away. In PvP there’s also a great reason to try using a slow instead of a stun – slows tend to fill up a much smaller amount of the resolve bar compared to stuns, so it’s often better to slow an enemy rather than using a stun on them.

This is a list of all the slows or passives that turn other abilities into slows available in the game by class (or rather, by Combat Style and Discipline). If you click the name of the slow, you can learn about what exactly the slow does, its range, what level you get it at, and where it’s a choice in your ability tree if it’s not available by default. Some slows work against all enemies, while others are only for weaker enemies.
