SWTOR Flashpoints Guide

Flashpoints are a type of repeatable content in Star Wars: The Old Republic that combat-focused, story-driven adventures that test either a single player or a group of players against interesting enemies in volatile situations. Some Flashpoints can be done alone, while others require a group, and many Flashpoints also have multiple difficulty modes available. Flashpoints are also available in many different level brackets, and even allow players as low as level 15 to play together with max-level characters in up to groups of 4.

Flashpoints can be done through the groupfinder with random players where the story cutscenes are skipped, with a group of friends where you can be in the cutscenes together, or for most flashpoints, even alone with your companion. Many Flashpoints are tied in to the main storyline, while others are stand-alone stories you can explore at any time.

How to Start

How you start a Flashpoint depends on which mode and which Flashpoint you are trying to enter.

  • Story Flashpoints can be entered alone or in a group – they exist to see the story, and give you a special droid that will help you during fights.
  • Veteran Flashpoints are meant to be done with a group of four, with any combination of roles and can be done with a mix of levels.
  • Group Finder (GF) Veteran flashpoints are for a group of four, with any combination of roles and can be done with a mix of levels, though a minimum level is required to be matched with a group in the group finder.
  • Master Flashpoints are difficult and are meant to be done with an experienced high-level group of four, including one healer, two DPS and a tank. Master Flashpoint quests are currently broken and allow you to enter before level 80, but all the enemies are level 80 and you should be too. †
  • Solo Players who are very skilled can complete most of the group-only flashpoints at a high level, with good gear and a high-influence companion.

First Flashpoint

You’ll be introduced to your first Flashpoint at around level 10+, once you complete your first planet. You’ll be directed to the Republic or Imperial Fleet, and from there, will have a set of story quests that will lead you to Dromund Kaas or Coruscant depending on your faction – with the option to do your first Flashpoint along the way. The first Flashpoint is called either The Esseles (Republic-side) or Black Talon (Imperial-side), and has the option to be done alone or with a group.

If you haven’t run any Flashpoint yet, I recommend running The Esseles (Republic-side) or Black Talon (Imperial-side) alone or with friends you know first, even if you skipped it! Flashpoints can be re-played at almost any time, so if you breezed past it, it would be a good idea to jump into the very first Flashpoint before trying any harder ones or trying or group flashpoints.

Run Flashpoints Alone

If you are looking to play Flashpoints alone, a majority of the Flashpoints have a story-mode available that is designed for one player and their companion – but you can bring up to a group of four players as long as they all meet the requirements. Story Flashpoints all do have a minimum level requirement though – for example, after the first Flashpoint, you can’t start the next solo story Flashpoint until level 29+.  Some of the newer solo story Flashpoints require level 75+ or level 80, so you won’t be able to see them for quite a while. See the chart below for when you can enter!

The FASTEST and EASIEST way to get into solo mode Flashpoints is with the Activity Finder. If you are level 10 or higher, click the icon of “three little people” on the bottom right of your screen which will open the Activity Finder Window.

Then choose the Solo tab in the Activity Finder. This will show you a list of solo activities you have available for your level, including Flashpoints!

Groupfinder Flashpoints

In addition to just making your own group of up to 4 players and jumping into a Flashpoint together, you can also use the Groupfinder to get randomly paired up with other players to run Flashpoints together. The Groupfinder’s default is Veteran Mode flashpoints, which are designed for levels 15-80, of any role or class. At a low level, these can be a fun activity to level up fast, while at max level, they can be a great way to gear up.

The Groupfinder is the easiest way to find other players to do group content with if you don’t already know anyone to play with, but due to the wide variety of types of players you might get paired up with, it can sometimes lead to a clash of what you’re looking for in a Flashpoint. Experienced players are often looking to run Groupfinder Flashpoints as fast and as efficiently as possible, while newer players may be wanting to take their time and not know the best routes. If you have very strong opinions about your goals, like wanting to run Flashpoints at super speed, or wanting to take your time and explore, you should not be using the groupfinder, and instead be forming up a group of like-minded individuals outside of it.

Master Mode Flashpoints

Master Mode is the level 80 difficulty version of Flashpoints, and is designed to be done by a group of max-level players who are decently geared and are comfortable with their role and class. Unlike Veteran mode where you can take anyone along, Master Mode has a strict level 80 requirement, and it’s recommended to have a Tank, Healer and 2 Damage-dealers. In the Master Mode groupfinder, this group set up is actually required rather than recommended. Master Modes technically offer better rewards, but efficient players will often run Veteran Modes instead to complete the Flashpoints faster for more overall rewards. The main reason to run Master Modes are for the fun of the challenge, for achievements, and occasionally for Galactic Seasons objectives. You can either use the Groupfinder to queue up, or put together a group of friends and walk into the Flashpoints manually.

Struggling in Flashpoints

Whether you are running alone or with a a group, if you are dying a lot, here’s some quick tips.

Group

  1. Check your gear. Your individual gear pieces should be roughly the same level as you are. You don’t have to worry about your gear unless you are dying frequently though. See the Low Level Gearing Guide or the Level 80 Gearing Guide.
  2. Learn your class. Figure out which abilities you have are speed abilities, defensive abilities, and attack abilities. Basic Class Guides
  3. Watch your team mates. Don’t go first – go where they go. Mount up when they mount up, and attack who they attack.

Solo

  1. Make sure you are in the correct mode. If you are trying to run the story mode, it can be easy to accidently enter the Veteran mode instead, which is designed for 4 players rather than 1. Check your quest log to see if it says [STORY] or [VETERAN].
  2. Check your gear. Your individual gear pieces should be roughly the same level as you are. You don’t have to worry about your gear unless you are dying frequently though. See the Low Level Gearing Guide or the Level 80 Gearing Guide.
  3. Set your companion to healer. If you are playing solo, they’ll help keep you alive as a healer if they aren’t already. Right-click their picture on the bottom left to set them.
  4. Upgrade your companion. If you are playing solo, try ranking up your companion’s influence a bit.
  5. Learn your class. Figure out which abilities you have are defensive abilities. Basic Class Guides
  6. Re-summon the droid. If you are playing solo, and the droid disappeared, use the ability beside the quest name or in your Mission Items inventory to re-summon him.

Rewards

In addition to seeing story, and getting XP and Gear for your level, Flashpoints also drop a bunch of unique cosmetic rewards that you can’t get anywhere else. Each Flashpoint has at least one unique item to earn, while others have a whole bunch! See the Flashpoint Unique Rewards Guide for all the cool items I’ve found drop from all the Flashpoints.

Flashpoint Guides

I’ve put together a guide for every Flashpoint in the entire game! You don’t need to read a guide before going into most Flashpoints – but you may want to brush up on any Master Mode mechanics if you’re going in for the first time, or you can use the guides to find out about secret achievements, secret bonus bosses, or other fun off-the-beaten-path things in the various Flashpoints.
