SWTOR Security Key Guide

Adding a Security Key to your SWTOR account makes it more secure, and also gets you some great free rewards like 100 Cartel Coins per month even as a free-to-play player, as well as access to some unique items from the Security Key Vendor including mounts, dancer costumes and dyes.

What is a Security Key?

A Security Key is like a second password – except it’s randomized, and shows up your smart phone. So when you go to log in to your SWTOR account, you’ll type in your username, normal password, and your Security Key from your phone. This makes your account more secure, as someone who somehow found out your password would still need your phone to login, making it a great way to make your account safer. As a bonus, it also allows to skip the one-time passwords that sometimes are required via email to log in to your account. The downside is you will always need your phone beside you to log in, and if you lose or break your phone, you will need to contact support to have them remove the Security Key.

How to add a Security Key to Your Account

Adding a Security Key to your account is SUPER easy these days and can be done with almost any type of smart phone. Even cooler, you can use your authenticator app of your own preference – you no longer need to use the SWTOR Security Key app that used to exist.

It used to look like this!

Step 1 –  Choose an Authenticator App

An Authenticator App combines all your security or authorization keys from different websites into one app.

  • Google/Android Phone: If you have a google or android phone, aka “not an iPhone”, you may already have the Google Authenticator app already installed! If you look in your apps on your phone, it looks like a rainbow-colored star.
  • iPhone: If you have an iPhone or Apple phone, there is often not a default Authenticator app installed. I recommend downloading and using a non-Apple app such as the Authy app, which you can get from the App Store on your phone.

Step 2 – Open your Authenticator on your Phone

The next step is to make sure you are logged into your authenticator app.

Google/Android Phone: If you have a google or android phone, you will likely already be all logged in and ready to go. Open up the Google Authenticator, and go through any steps it is asking you to take first.

Authy/iPhone: If you are using Authy instead, you will likely need to go through some set-up first if this is the first time you are using it. Open up the Authy App, and go through any steps it is asking you to take first.

Step 3 – Login to SWTOR.com

I RECOMMEND DOING THIS ON THE COMPUTER.

The next step is to go to the swtor.com website and log in using the Account button on the top right. If it asks for a one-time password to your email, remember to be patient, it can take a few minutes.

Step 4 – Click “Add Security Key” button

Scroll down on your account page and click the blue and black Add Security Key button.

Step 5 – Get one-time password from email

It will ask you for a one-time password to your email, remember to be patient, it can take a few minutes.

Step 6 – Scan QR Code with App

The next step is to scan your QR code.

Open your Authenticator app. There will likely be an option somewhere to add a new authenticator key. It almost always looks like a plus sign +.

Google Authenticator: Rainbow plus sign on the bottom right, and choose “Scan a QR Code”.

Authy App: Red plus sign.

This will open your camera – point it towards your screen where you see the big black and white QR code and hold it still until it automatically takes a picture of your QR code.

Step 7 – Type in your new authenticator number

Your authenticator code changes every minute or so – it will be different every time. If you are slow at typing, wait for the little circle on the right to fully reset which will give you a full minute to type it in. The number is your temporary authorization code.

If you’ve done all that, you’ve successfully added your Security Key to your account!

Logging in with a Security Key

The next time you go to log in, you will need to fill out your username, password, and the new updated security key from your phone.

This will be the number from your Authenticator app.

How to Remove a Security Key

If you are getting a new phone, or just want to remove your security key, as long as you still have your current phone it’s very esy. Log in to SWTOR.com, go to your account page, and click the Remove Security Key button.

Lost, Broken, or Stolen Phone

It gets a lot harder if you do not currently have your security key – for example if your phone is broken or lost.

YOU WILL NEED TO CALL THEM. The developers do not deal with account security and access issues over email.

Security Key Coins

For every month you use a security key, you get 100 Cartel Coins added to your account as a reward, even if you are not subscribed, and even if you are not actively playing.

Your first grant of free Cartel Coins is almost immediate. After that, the Security Key grant is every thirty days from the first granted coins, as long as you still have a Security Key attached to your account. Players often report the timing is a bit finicky, so you may need to wait a few extra days.
