Dark Side Corruption in SWTOR

Reaching in to the dark side of the Force can grant the user incredible power, but its malevolent enegy takes a toll on the user’s mind and body. Flesh and bone lack the endurance needed  to channel the immense power of the dark side for long periods of time, and over time, any creature that leans too far in to the dark side will become physically corrupted by its power. In this video, we’ll be going over how the dark side of the Force will change the appearance of your character in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Dark Side Corruption In-game

As you play the game, you’ll notice your character earns dark side and light side points – these most noticeably come from making dark or light choices in cutscenes during the story with your character. You can also earn dark side points from many other sources based on a toggle found on the bottom right of the screen – you declare your character’s allegiance to the dark side or the light side, and almost any activity in game will earn you dark or light points, including most missions and defeating any enemies.

Your dark side or light side ranking usually does not have a big effect on the story, as your character always gets to make their own decisions independently of their alignment. There are a few cool instances however like in the Sith Inquisitor story, where there are minor variations depending on your character’s alignment. The biggest effect your alignment has on your character is your appearance – as your move towards the dark side of the dark side of the Force, your character will become visually corrupted – their eyes will change, their skin will become paler and lose its color, and the veins of your character’s face will become more visible. This dark side corruption can be toggled on and off in the character panel, which can be opened with C on your keyboard, then by clicking the tiny symbol of an armor set near the numbered tabs at the top, and the setting is called “Show Dark Side corruption” at the bottom.

This panel is also where you can see your current alignment, and how many dark side points you have, by rolling over the alignment bar.

How does Dark Side Corruption look?

Your character’s dark side corruption increases as you gain more dark side points, and will change when your dark side level goes up or down.

How to Earn Dark Side Points to get Full Dark Side Corruption

Players often ask, what’s a quick way to earn Dark Side points to get full dark side corruption? In short, pretty much any activity in the game will grant you dark side points if you have the Dark side symbol chosen in the alignment toggle near your minimap. Popular activities players suggest include….

  • PvP / Warzones
  • Leveling
  • Flashpoints
  • Operations
  • Dailies

Black Talon / The Esseles & Flashpoints

Players often suggest that you run Flashpoints, especially the Imperial Black Talon and the Republic Esseles Flashpoints which can be accessed very early in the game, thinking that their cutscenes might reward some extra dark or light points. While these two flashpoints are GREAT for earning social points, they’re not nearly as fast for earning dark side points. When running Flashpoints, while you will get a few extra Dark or Light points from the cutscenes, in my case I got only 330 at the very end of the missions for choosing the two dark side options during the cutscenes, a majority of your dark side points will come from enemies which are worth 4 points each including bosses, so if you’re a stealther, make sure you aren’t skipping the enemies.  These points can be earned from defeating enemies from any type of content, so there’s no longer any need to run just Flashpoints – you can run any type of content where you defeat enemies.

Heroics / Dailies

To give an example of running a more normal mission at level 75 – you get 130 dark side points per normal mission. You would need to run 760 dailies or heroic missions to go from Dark 0 to Dark 5.

PvP / Warzones

Playing Player vs Player matches in warzones and arenas is also a great way to earn dark side points. Unlike Flashpoints or other solo content, you don’t get any points from defeating players – instead, at the end of the match you’ll get either a flat 1,000 or 1,500 dark side points, which you can see pop up on the leaderboard. I think it’s based on medals, and you’ll get 1500 points if you get at least 14 medals in the normal warzone matches. Add in about 130 points you get from completing the daily quests and PvP is a good recipe for dark side points, while queuing up crafting in between matches which we’ll talk about next. You would need to run about 100 warzones to go from Dark Side 0 to Dark Side V.

Diplomacy & Crew Skills

Diplomacy, a crew skill, used to be the fastest way to change your alignment – it offered some mission that gave you light side points and some that gave you dark side points. Now, ALL CREW SKILLS GIVE DARK OR LIGHT POINTS! BUT DIPLOMACY IS STILL THE BEST TO GAIN DARK SIDE / LIGHT SIDE POINTS – HOWEVER IT IS THE MOST COMPLICATED!

How to Gain Dark Side Points with Crew Skills & Gathering

If you have a level 700 skill with access to Grade 11 gathering missions apart from diplomacy, every time you send out a full round of companions, you’ll get about a thousand dark side points. With 8 companions at influence level 50, each of these missions take 6 to 13 minutes each, you’d need to send your companions out about 100 times to go from Neutral or Dark Side 0 all the way to Dark Side V, in about 13 hours worth of mission time and about three quarters of a million credits, so it’s not meant to be done over night.

How to Gain Dark Side Points with Diplomacy

If you have level 700 Diplomacy with access to Grade 11 gathering missions, every time you send out a full round of companions with these specific missions in Grade 10 and Grade 11: A Wanderer’s Gifts, Friends in Low Places, Strained Negotiations, and Uncivil War, and ignore the rest, you’ll get about 1,600 dark side points per round, which is quite a lot more than the other crew skills – but you have to spend time choosing the missions from the Grade 10 and Grade 11 lists.

More Info

So here’s the facts about using Diplomacy or another gathering skills to get dark side points:

  • You can earn Dark or Light points as early as gathering level 1, and you’ll earn Dark or Light side points based what option you’ve chosen on the alignment toggle – in the past you had to pick and choose your missions, some were light side, some were dark side, but now they are unified with your alignment toggle choice, though sometimes your companions will get confused and bring you back a few light side points
  • The higher the grade of the missions, the more dark side points you will earn. Whether the missions is grey, green yellow, or orange does not matter for dark side points, that just affects levelling up your crew skill level
  • Since the color of the mission doesn’t matter, it make sense to send out all your companions, even if you only have lower-grade or grey missions available, that way you’ll still get dark dark side points.
  • The special missions you get from Mission Discovery items don’t seem to award extra dark side points. neither does your companion’s influence level.
  • You can see how many dark or light side points by rolling over the dark or light symbol
  • Each grade gathering mission rewards a different amount for all skills EXCEPT diplomacy.
    • Grade 1: 16 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 2: 24 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 3: 32 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 4: 41 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 5: 47 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 6: 58 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 7: 66 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 8: 81 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 9: 92 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 10: 102 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 11: 130 Dark Side Points
  • Diplomacy is a bit different – each missions naturally leans towards the dark side or light side, even if the icon beside the quest shows dark side. You will need to hover your mouse over the dark side symbol, and see what dark and light points it rewards. Some missions reward pure dark side points, and these missions reward more dark side points than missions from any other crew skill. However, some missions reward a mix of light and dark, and sending your companion out on these missions may even wind up with you accidentally getting light side points instead! These are the diplomacy missions you should do in the Grade 10 and 11 grades: A Wanderer’s Gifts, Friends in Low Places, Strained Negotiations, and Uncivil War, and ignore the rest.
    • Grade 11 – A Wanderer’s Gifts – 222 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 11 – Friends in Low Places- 220 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 11 – Strained Negotiations – 218 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 11 – Uncivil War – 216 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 10 – A Wanderer’s Gifts – 186 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 10 – Friends in Low Places – 182 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 10 – Strained Negotiations – 180 Dark Side Points
    • Grade 10 – Uncivil War – 178 Dark Side Points
