Dear Swtorista: What’s your favorite class?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions I get when people first meet me!

My favorite class story is the Imperial Agent, but the Sith Inquisitor is the story I’ve replayed the most and keep coming back to!

I’ve also got some cool community facts about favorite classes – did you know the Sith Warrior is the most created class?

Community Favorites

This question a great icebreaker when you’re chatting with someone you just met who also plays the game, but it can be hard to answer if you’ve only played a few of the eight class stories. A couple years ago, I made a point of finally trying out all eight, with the Bounty Hunter being my very last story to complete, and I like to joke that you’re only qualified to answer the question if you’ve had a chance to try all eight of the stories.

So which classes are there in the game to choose from?

  • Jedi Knight
  • Jedi Consular
  • Sith Warrior
  • Sith Inquisitor
  • Trooper
  • Smuggler
  • Bounty Hunter
  • Imperial Agent

Many years ago, we actually did a huge player survey on an unofficial SWTOR forum – over 700 people answered the classic question of what your favorite class is, and the answer was pretty surprising, as players who liked discussing the game online overwhelmingly voted one class their favorite!

740 players voted and ranked the classes they played from best to worst – here are the results!

  • Of those 740 players, only 19 had only ever played one class, and 58% had played all eight classes.
  • The most played class was the Sith Warrior! Only 13% of players who voted had not played this class.
  • The least played class was the Trooper. Almost 30% of players who voted had not played the class.
  • The highest rated class was the Imperial Agent. Of all players who voted, 36% of them voted the Imperial Agent as their #1 favorite class in the game. It was followed by the Sith Warrior.
  • The least-favorite class was the Trooper – not only was it the least played class, of all players that voted, only 13 people voted it as their favorite class story. Of those that actually played the trooper story, on a scale of 1 to 8 with 1 being the best class, the average for the trooper was around 6th place. More players had played Jedi Consular, and more had voted it their #1 favorite class, but in the rankings, it averaged out only slightly better than the Trooper.

Kind of neat, these player answers didn’t line up with how many of each class had been created in an official infographic from 2014, where the most created class was actually the Jedi Knight!

My Favorite

After playing all the stories, I settled on the Imperial Agent being my favorite, due to its twists and turns, and how the Agent story can vary the most from player to player. When I first played this class, it was with Mr. Swtorista, and we weren’t married yet, and dating long-distance, so playing together online was one of the few ways we could really spend time together! While we were playing, we’d go into the Agent stories separately, and then rendezvous afterwards and compare notes. It was REALLY cool to see how different choosing different decisions had an impact on the story and cutscenes – and it was often more than just a simple light-side/dark-side choice.

I won’t spoil the story, but there are some major choices you get to make both partway through the story as well as at the end, that can drastically change both the path of your character’s story, as well as the fate of the galaxy. You also get to really lean into the intrigue – this is a great class to play if it’s not your first character, because you’ll learn about so many sneaky things going on in the background of multiple planets and organizations.

The Imperial Agent has the most amount of spoilers out of all the eight class stories, and I highly recommend playing yourself first and then later comparing which options you chose! I got so interested in the story and its differences that I even tried writing an in-depth spoiler-heavy summary of the story!

As a bonus, the Agent also has a lot of interesting lines if you are playing as an Alien character, in a world where Aliens are only just starting to be allowed into positions of power in the Empire.

With that said, I’ve actually only played the Imperial Agent story TWICE! The Sith Inquisitor story is the one I keep coming back to, over and over. There’s just something about the idea of Sith Alchemy that really intrigues me. And with the Sith Inquisitor, you get a lot of that! For my free-to-play account, I had to pick one class to replay, and I picked the Inquisitor, and even did a whole Let’s Play series on it!

The Sith Inquisitor also has three unique non-official titles your character can receive in the story, depending on their alignment at the very end, and I also made sure to go play through each – first as a vicious, murderous dark-side Sith, once as a light-side Sith who is simply forced into the life-or-death life of the Inquisitor, and lastly, a power-hungry, conniving Sith whose goal is only to rise up the ranks, for the neutral ending.
