Darth Naming Rules

There does not seem to be any direct rules for choosing a Darth name. Some Darths go by their last name, like Darth Krovos, while others choose a new name like Darth Bane, and others are granted their new Darth name by someone more powerful or by a Dark Council, like Darth Vader.

Chosen names are often highly related to the Sith's life or accomplishments. Darth Bane chose his name as his father called him 'the bane of his existence.' When laying the Sith Inquisitor in Star Wars: The Old Republic, at the end of the story, the player is granted a title based on their alignment: Darth Nox (dark side), Darth Occlus (neutral alignment) or Darth Imperius (light side).

Chosen names often have a root word that has an ominous, threatening or negative meaning - for example, Darth Vader comes from the word 'Invader', and Sidious from 'Insidious'. Darth Marr is the root word 'mar' with an extra r. Others are simply the full word unchanged, like Darth Maul.

Other chosen names take a nice-sounding begginning prefix and slap '-on', '-ous' or '-is' at the end. For example, a slave named Teneb Kel became Darth Thanaton, and Darth Mekhis has no evil root word.
