In Star Wars: The Old Republic, you might sometimes run into an issue where you simply can’t get the game to progress past a certain point – for whatever reason, most of the rest of the game works fine, but a specific cutscene, area or storyline may cause your game to crash or go to a black screen.
A common crashing point for SWTOR is the cutscene in the Jedi Under Siege storyline, on the planet of Ossus, both on Imperial and Republic side at slightly different points. This most commonly happens in the later part of the story, during some of the later cutscenes, but can even sometimes happen when travelling around the planet of Ossus. If you are froen during a cutscene, the story does not progress, and you’d just kinda get stuck, and your computer might be acting funny like being unable to ALT+Tab or being unable to easily use the task manager to close the stuck SWTOR program.
Imperial side: For players with this specific issue (spoilers ahead) you would defeat Jedi Master Gnost Dural in the Jedi Under Siege story chain, then the cutscene would play, but then freezes once it has completed. The cutscene fades to black with subtitles still on screen – then freezes. What should happen is another cutscene should play of the Imperial Character and Darth Malgus exiting the temple into a starfighter attack.
Republic side: For players with this specific issue (spoilers ahead) this often happens when beginning a cutscene after fighting Darth Malora, then conversation suddenly freezes. You may be able to still hear the music and audio in the background, but the music eventually freezes too. After the fight with Malora, game freezes on the cutscene, with no progress towards the next part of the story.

Normal Crashing Fixes
Normally, if your game crashes, it’s often because something on your computer isn’t up to date or something in your game files got corrupted, and often going through a list one by one will fix things for you.
- If your game instead is crashing while playing other parts of the game and not just this cutscene, see the Crashing While Playing Guide.
- If you can’t even get your game to start, see the SWTOR not Launching After Clicking Play Guide.
These normal fixes will not work for this specific Jedi Master Gnost Dural and Darth Malora crashing / freezing bug, but they may work for other issues so players often incorrectly recommend them.
- Try re-doing the fight and cutscene. (Does not work for this issue.)
- Try resetting or abandoning the quest (Does not work for this issue.)
- Restart the game. (Does not work for most people for this issue.)
- Lower your graphics settings all the way (Does not work for most people for this issue.)

How to Fix the Gnost Dural and Darth Malora Ossus Cutscene Freeze Bug
This specific issue on Ossus is more than likely related to your Graphics Card being not quite good enough to run this cutscene. For whatever reason, this specific cutscene does not do well even if you meet the minimum computers requirements to run SWTOR in general, and you may even be able to run the rest of the game below minimum requirements and not have too many issues until you hit this specific cutscene.
Video card Issue: For example, one player had played through the entire story with minimal issues until this cutscene, and it turns out their graphics card was a Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000, but that video card has 32 MB of dedicated memory, but the the game requirement is 1024 MB, which is why the cutscene gets stuck. Other players who reported this freeze issue said they had a Windows 11 Intel UHD Graphics laptop,
1. Turn Down the Graphics Settings
The first quick thing you can do that might fix the issue is by turning down your graphics settings to the lowest possible in the game’s settings, before you run the cutscene. It’s likely you are already running the game very low though, and this may make no difference.
In addition, a weird tip that seems to work for a few people, but definitely not everyone, is to try and quickly spacebar through the cutscene after turning down the graphics settings. There is a small chance this may help you skip past the stuck part.
2. Update Graphic Drivers
The next quick thing you can do that might fix the issue is check and update your graphics drivers. You can learn how to do that here. There is a good chance this may not make any difference though, but it’s an easy fix if so!
3. Play through the Stuck Cutscene/Area On Another Computer
This is a fairly difficult solution, but if you have this as an option, it can be an easy fix!
Since it is your computer specifically that is getting you stuck on the cutscene, if you have access to another computer with SWTOR installed, you may be able to log in there, and just finish up the next couple of cutscene in the area of Ossus on that other computer, then continue playing your story on your own computer. This works great if you have a family member or friend’s computer you can use to log in to the game on your account!
5. Contact Support to Skip You Forward
In general, if you computer crashes while playing SWTOR, you should go through the checklist of thing you would normally try and this will often fix it for you. Here’s the Crashing While Playing Guide for general issues – this is often a lot faster than contact support and will also help with future problems in SWTOR and potentially even other games you play!
However, if you get stuck in the Master Gnost Dural or Darth Malora Cutscene, email support@swtor.com and they can move you forward through the story manually! They can’t force the cutscene to play on your computer for you, but they can help you bypass that specific cutscene so you can continue on in the story.
Make sure to include these details:
- Hello, my character is currently stuck on a cutscene on Ossus because the cutscenes freezes on my computer and do not allow me to complete the story, likely because my graphics card is not good enough to play the cutscene. May you please skip my character forward past the cutscene I’m currently on so I can continue playing the story? Thank you for your help.
- My SWTOR email:
- My SWTOR username:
- My character’s server:
- My character’s faction:
- My character’s name:
- My current quest I am stuck on:
For another player who submitted this request, Customer Service was able to log into their account, skip past the cutscene for them, and sent them back to their faction’s base on Ossus. Nice! While this won’t permanently fix the issue of your graphic’s card not being quite good enough for the game, it will help you keep playing other parts of the game that are less intensive.
6. Upgrade Your Graphics Card
In the end, the issue is happening because your graphics card isn’t quite good enough to run the cutscene. If you want to avoid this issue in the future, unfortunately you’d need to upgrade your graphics card.
If you are crashing while just driving around Ossus, rather than just in a specific cutscene, and the other big list of fixes from the Crashing While Playing Guide didn’t help, it may simply be time to upgrade your graphics card, or stick to games that are more suited for your current computer.
Thank you so much to player spartantraveler for sharing so much of their experience with this bug, so I could write a guide for the many other players who run into this specific issue!
