SWTOR Battle of Ilum Flashpoint Guide

The Battle of Ilum is a Flashpoint in Star Wars: The Old Republic that you can run alone, with friends, or with other random players through the groupfinder.

The Battle of Ilum

There is a traitor among the Sith. Using their knowledge of the Imperial military to their own advantage, one of the most feared military commanders in the galaxy has turned their back on the Empire, and has declared themselves the leader of a new, stronger Empire. Now the traitorous Sith Lord has commandeered a powerful Imperial battlestation, and has used their influence to build a formidable army. Now the traitor intends to use a fleet of experimental starships to purge the Empire of old and crush the Republic once and for all. The new Empire’s new target: Ilum. As Imperial and Republic forces clash over this vital world, the new Empire’s fleet intervenes and opens fire on both factions weakened forces. With this new Empire posing a threat to both the Republic and Empire, both sides assemble teams of their most powerful and experienced heroes. Their mission: fight through the renegade’s forces, commandeer one of their ships and make their way to the Sith traitor’s battlestation.

How to Start

The Battle of Ilum is a Flashpoint meant to be played at almost any time during your levelling or story path – but it would be smart to play it after your class story ends on Corellia, and before you start the expansions. You can encounter it in the story soon after you finish your class story, replay it alone in Story mode, or play it outside of the story with a group in Story, Veteran or Master mode.

Use the tabs above for instructions for how to enter the flashpoint in the story line, and how to enter it in Solo (Story) mode, Veteran mode, and Master mode by faction.

Story – Republic Instructions

Requirements: To play the The Battle of Ilum Flashpoint in the story, and receive all the special cutscenes related to the Flashpoint in the story, you will need to be level 48+ and on the correct step of Ilum Under Siege as part of the Ilum Story Arc. If you are below this level, or have not done the Ilum Story Arc ‘Crystal Ball’ and its related quests up to Ilum Under Siege, you can not play the story quest for this Flashpoint.

Timeline: In the story, this Flashpoint takes place after your class story ends on Corellia. If you missed the natural entry point for this story arc and Flashpoint, it would be smart to play them before you start the Onslaught expansion as the events are directly tied into the fifth and sixth expansion.

Bring a Friend: If you want to bring a friend along for this Flashpoint in Story Mode to do the full story line, you easily can.

If they have not done the Crystal Ball Ilum Story Arc, they can join you in a group and you can follow the exact same steps together as long as they are level 47+.

If they have already run the storyline, they’ll be able to join you in the cutscenes after talking to the first quest giver, by walking in the door after you on Ilum at the the Republic Base Camp for the Supreme Commander Rans quest. Then after you finish that cutscene with them watching, you’ll be able to enter the Flashpoint, but your friend won’t have any quests so they can’t walk in behind you… tell them to go talk to the nearby DG-93 droid and pick up the [Start Story Mode] quest and then they will be able to enter the Flashpoint with you at level 48+.

They can also use the Solo tab in the Activity Finder to quickly join you once you are already inside the Flashpoint as long as they are level 48+.

Directions to the Republic Story Quest for The Battle of Ilum: The Battle of Ilum’s one-time story quest, which is the Ilum story Arc leading up to it, is started by speaking to a questgiver on the fleet named Lieutenant Ha’laa, at level 47 or higher. The questgiver will have a purple triangle quest over its head, and is in the center ring of the Fleet. The Flashpoint itself is located on Ilum at the Republic Base Camp, which you would need to fly to. The flashpoint storyline, the Ilum Story Arc, is called Crystal Ball for Republic players.

Step 1 – Talk to the Questgiver near the inner ring of the Republic Fleet named Lieutenant Ha’laa, a yellow Twi’lek

Step 2 – Get to the Ilum Republic Base Camp by flying to Ilum with your ship

Step 3 – Before taking the shuttle down to the planet, stop and speak to the Shuttle Pilot on the space station, right before the shuttle

Step 4 –  Follow the quest marker for the Crystal Ball quest, and speak to Supreme Commander Rans on the Republic Base Camp – go in the green door, do NOT go down the elevator to the second level of the Republic Base Camp.

Once inside talk to Supreme Commander Rans to watch the introductory quest.

This will lead you on a series of quests on Ilum, leading up to the Flashpoint finales:

  • Crystal Ball
  • A Gentleman’s Agreement
  • Armada
  • The Jedi Temple
  • Ilum Under Siege

Once you complete the Ilum Under Siege step, you’ll automatically be on the quest [STORY] The Battle of Ilum. Finally, go down the nearby elevator to the Lower Levels. The Battle of Ilum will be on the Lower Level of the Ilum base. Head on in, you don’t need to talk to the questgiver outside the entrance. Heads up, you need to be 47 to start the Ilum Story Arc, but you need to be level 48 to start the story version of the Flashpoint.

If you play in Story Mode, you will also get a Combat Support Droid to help you.

If you lose him, you can re-summon him by left-clicking the blue symbol beside the The Battle of Ilum quest.

If you can’t see that icon, you can also right-click the item in the Mission Items tab of your inventory.

Story Progress: [STORY] The Battle of Ilum alone will not progress your storyline – it is simply the repeatable solo version. To work on the overarching story, you also need to be on the quest Ilum Under Siege on the step Complete Flashpoint: The Battle of Ilum and then run the [STORY] Flashpoint: The Battle of Ilum quest.

Lost the quest? If you lost the Crystal Ball quest, head back to the Lieutenant Ha’laa questgiver you started at to re-pick up the quest. Keep in mind this story-based introductory quest Crystal Ball is one-time-per-character, and you shouldn’t be able to abandon it. If you lost the ability to walk into the Flashpoint door, or lost the quest with the word Flashpoint in it, you can pick up the  [STORY] Flashpoint: The Battle of Ilum quest from the DG-93 Droid outside the flashpoint’s entrance.

Bosses

This Flashpoint has three boss fights – Gark the Indomitable a Gamorrean, Drinda Zel and Velasu Graege the Alien Commanders in front of the red shield, Darth Serevin the final boss and a bonus boss named the Guid Patriarch.

In story mode, and in Veteran Mode when you have multiple players you can use the medpacs scattered around the bosses. Right-click them to heal yourself.

The following boss info is mainly for story and Veteran mode – Master Mode tactics are not covered in this guide.

Boss 1 – Gark the Indomitable

Gark can be skipped by heading towards the right, if your group does not want to fight him.

This boss summons a bunch of smaller enemies. You can ignore them and fight the main boss unless you are dying.

Boss 2 – Drinda Zel and Velasu Garege

Turrets show up during this  alien commanders fight, but you can mostly ignore them until the fight with the bosses is over, unless you are dying.

Boss 3 – Crystal Cutter Droid and Crystal Harvester Droid

These bosses have a mining beam attack, but you only need to worry about it if you are dying – use a defensive ability if you are.

Boss 4 – Krel Thok

Krel Thak can be skipped – you just run all the way past him and don’t stop, if your group does not want to fight him.

This boss summons lots of smaller enemies.

When he has his little blue screen up, and red text shows up on the screen, he will push you back if you get too close to him, so you can just focus on the smaller enemies.

Bonus Boss – Guid Patriarch

You may want to clear the room of Vorntigers before fighting this boss.

Boss 5 – Commander Folex

Boss 6 – Darth Serevin

Most groups fight Queneth Li the Voss in white robes first.

He will stun you, but you likely just need to wait for him to be done.

To leave the Flashpoint once you’ve finished, use the Exit Area button or walk out the colorful door nearby.

Bonus Quests

The bonus boss and bonus quests in Battle of Ilum are available for all modes – Story, Veteran and Master.

Evening the Odds and destroying the turbolasers is for XP and credits, while the other quest, Crystal Fortress, is for the bonus boss- you will need to defeata total of 70 enemies and find 10 mining supplies in the crystal caves so you can fight the bonus boss.

Evening the Odds

  • Destroy the Turbolaser Batteries 0/6

This quest is just for extra credits/xp. Right-click the glowing blue turret panels – you need to find 6 of the 7, all on the first map.

Crystal Fortress

This bonus quest unlocks the bonus boss.

  • Defeat Malgus’s Forces 0/30
  • Defeat Malgus’s Forces 0/40
  • Destroy the Crystal Mining Supplies 0/10
  • Destroy the Auxiliary Generator (Bonus Boss)

Ideally, you will want to defeat the 70 total enemies before you reach the crystal caves, as the supplies are in the caves and are the next step – otherwise you’ll need to go backwards and kill more enemies.

The crystal mining supplies are glowing blue boxes you can right-click, in the caves. There’s a cute little “secret” area of the caves on the west side – when you follow a little tunnel, it will lead you deeper into a section not marked on the maps.

Inside is an easter egg of a dead tauntaun, a frozen human, and three crystal mining supplies.

Finishing the bonus quest will unlock the Guid Patriarch bonus boss. He’s located in the west outside of the crystal caves.

Skips

What follows are a quick gallery of images depicting specific walking routes that may save you some time by avoiding enemies during the flashpoint – certain routes will be highlited as the main “community routes” that you’ll probably see players in random activity-finder groups try to do – if you only practice one skip out of all of these, make it the community one! All of the following images are done without stealth or without a sleep dart/mind maze from a stealth character, so anyone can attempt them. If you fail to slip by unnoticed or see your team has attacked the enemies – always pull back from these routes and go back to help them defeat them! These may save time if everyone does them, but nothing makes a flashpoint slower than running ahead and not helping others to get out of combat again.

Solo Stealth: If you are playing The Battle of Ilum alone and are on a Stealth character, you can skip many of the enemies.

Skip #1

As per usual, this guide does not cover sleep dart skips. This officer here in front of the steps out of the trench is a very common sleep dart target, but even without, if you’re very quick you can temporarily leap up out of the trench, and drop down onto the other side safely without being blasted away. The next officer around the corner is too close to his wall to be jumped around without a dart, but it should be noted that he’s a common dart target for that reason, too.

Skip #2

If you’re skipping the bonus stuff, stick to this left-hand wall behind all the boxes and the big spider droid shouldn’t hassle you any. You’ll have to fight the next one around the corner though.

Skip #3

Gark here is entirely optional. You can just walk around him by running behind all the junk on the right-hand wall. You’ll need to kill the silver-level door guards up ahead.

Skip #4

Jump over the railing to get off the stairs early here and simply use the right half of the room to dodge more enemies on your way up.

Skip #5

This one can be a bit timing dependant so hopefully your group is together – as you get close the big droid will start patrolling. Simply wait behind one of these two boxes and run along the rails to the first boss once the coast is clear.

Skip #6 – Community Skip

The Adegan crystal mines can be pretty hit or miss for skips because some require cutting corners leaping over crystals thatll get you stuck and reset you or the vorntigers are just patrolling around too much to be reliable, so after you make it through the cave the first reliable skip is this common community one – just mount up and go left around the main road. You’ll still trigger and have to fight the ship-unloaded landing party though.

Skip #7

With some fancy jumping, you can get around the patroling huge droid and all the kaleesh guys out front of the base too. Simply hop from cargo to ice and from ice to the bunker door, then climb all the way up and drop down onto the box behind the door guards. Then run inside.

Boss Skip – Krel Thak

When you get to Krel Thak, your group may choose to skip past him – you just run all the way past him and don’t stop. Run all the way outside, and eventually him and all his smaller enemies will run back and reset, allowing you to keep moving forward in the Flashpoint. I had to run all the way to the bridge or further in some cases.

Skip #8

Sometimes it feels silly calling some of these skips, but after the 2nd boss just remember that you can go around these guys near the computers on your way out…

Skip #9 – Community Skip

Another frequent one in public groups, once outside again just hang left yet again, jumping on some ice if needed to get away from the enemies on the road. Once over the little hill in this image, make sure to stay left and avoid the patrolling robot on the road until you get to the bridge up ahead.

Skip #10

If you were sticking to the left side of the road in skip#9, you’ll notice a group of paratroopers running to meet you up ahead near the bridge. Cross to the right-hand side to avoid them, then cut in behind and up the left side of the bridge to avoid the one medic they left behind. Hop the barricade to make sure you’re as far left as you can be, as the medic commonly catches folks.

Skip #11 – Community Skip

In this next section you need to disable three generators before moving on. After defeating generator B, go across the street and drop into generator A’s area this way without using the stairs. The next skip will come from within this pit, but defeat the guards to the keyboard and use it for now. You can exit the pit to go get generator C, then come back to A’s pit to continue.

Skip #12 – Community Skip

Back inside A’s pit after all 3 generators have gone down, hop up these boxes and hop the railing to get around all the enemies that are waiting for you to use the stairs like a chump.

Skip #13

Finally, just before the last boss, if you hang right in this room with central computers, you can skip the final pack of enemies entirely and head to the boss.
